Observed and predicted distributions of the years served and the years remaining for members of the 1980 U.S. Senate. Predicted distributions were based on the inverse of the means of years served and predicted as the exponential rate parameters. Note the small differences between the observed and predicted distributions for year served but the differences between these distributions for years remaining. This graphic sheds light on why some differences exist between observed and predicted means in Fig. 7a, b
